Datang hooks up with Microsoft and Dell

Churning Chinese 3G

By John Daly in Germany @ Thursday, July 31, 2008 11:58 AM

Datang, which makes network equipment based on the Chinese 3G standard TD-SCDMA, has linked up with a few international biggies, amongst them Dell and Microsoft.

Apparently, the equipment maker has signed a memorandum with Microsoft and will roll out TD-SCDMA drivers for the upcoming Windows 7, which hopefully won't be such a disturbing annoyance as Vista. Datang will also add terminal solutions and apps to Windows Mobile and roll out other value-added TD-SCDMA based services.

Dell is going to receive TD-SCDMA cards for their notebooks and other gadgetry from Datang, which can be preinstalled. The cards will support normal voice traffic, alongside data services.

Datang said signing the pacts with Dell and Microsoft will make TD-SCDMA more popular and help roll the home-grown 3G standard out to to other markets. As a matter of fact, TD-SCDMA has been getting some wind in its sails in the last few days. The standard is going to hit Europe this year when Italian network equipment maker will roll out a trial network in its home market. Mywave will be cooperating with Shanghai Potevio, an equipment maker based in China.

Companies are getting interested in TD-SCDMA for their products, as 3G licences will go up for sale in China later this year. The Chinese government announced licences would be available once it had finalised restructuring its telecoms market. The step was announced at the end of May. X
