Some IT security outfit named Panda Security unveiled a pretty piece of shameless self-promotion for its services today. Panda Security had its malware lab PandaLabs conjure up a report with another company called CommTouch stating 10 million zombies are on the loose, distributing spam and malware on a daily basis. Zombies 'are small programs dropped on computers that enable attackers to take remote control of the system and botnets are groups of computers infected by bots and primed to act in unison'. Gosh, whatever will evildoers think of next? Good thing Panda Security, Batman and Bob Geldof are there to make the world a better place.
According to the report, 74% of all mails was spam, however Pandalabs didn't state if the entire bulk came from disenfranchised zombie PCs. However, Panda Security did reveal that Turkey was most zombified. The country accounts for 11% of zombie PCs worldwide, whilst Brazil scored second place with 8.4% infected PCs. Russia, the world's current premier bully, had to make do with third spot (7.4%), whilst the United States of America hit ninth place, i.e. 4.3%.
Apparently, spammers used blog platform Blogspot.com to spread malicious content around the globe, whilst Blogdrive.com was drenched in links to porn sites. Google Adwords was used to phish information from unsuspecting and gullible Adword users, who believed the kind email asking them to reactivate their Google Adwords account was an official message, not a villainous, treacherous leech spewed of by spammers believing they were in the same league as Doctor Moriarty.
