| | The Department of Telecommunication’s (DoT) secretary, Siddartha Behura has said that the much-awaited auction for third generation (3G) mobile phone services is unlikely to take place before the upcoming general elections - scheduled between April and May.
Behura said, 'It looks difficult.'
However, the communication and Information technology minister, Andimuthu Raja has expressed his hope saying the auction may take place by end of March 2009.
After postponing the 3G spectrum auction twice, the government still doesn't have a proper plan, which can introduce such high-tech mobile phone services in India.
The Group of Ministers (GoM), headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, has been formed to look into the 3G imbroglio. GoM has earlier decided to come up with the spectrum road-map by the second week of February, but in vain.
IT Examiner had earlier reported that with the general elections loom large over the Indian political scape, 3G auction looks headed to the deep freeze.
The delays in the auction process have been caused by internal differences within the cabinet ministry. The government hasn’t yet managed to come to a consensus over doubling the reserve price for 3G and Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum as suggested by the finance ministry. X
