Despite fears of a slow-down in the US economy, Sony says that customers can't get enough of its digital TVs, cameras and computer goods.
Stan Glasgow, president and chief of operating officer of Sony Electronics told a group of reporters in San Francisco that there had been no slow-down in sales. However, he added that to do that, Sony has had to 'manage pressure on margins'.
Increased energy, raw materials costs and a gutted US dollar meant that Sony had to juggle its costs and expenditure, for example by sourcing kit from places where the dollar had some buying power. It has also had to set up tighter distribution lines and simpler packaging. Sony has been looking to Mexico to produce components instead of Japan, he said.
All that has meant that digital TVs and related accessories, including Blu-ray HD video players, have been doing quite well in the US, with no signs of the market softening, he said. X
