Kung Fu star hit by Chinese pirates

No way, Segway

By Nick Farrell in Rome @ Thursday, June 05, 2008 10:10 AM

Kung Fu superstar Jackie Chan's side-line Segway dealership is facing high prices because the company will not let him assemble the trendy scooters in mainland China.

Speaking to a security fair in Hong Kong, the 54 year old star said that his business was doing well, but the main problem it was costing him a fortune to make the Segways in the former British colony.

He wanted to move production to a factory on the mainland, but was blocked by Segway in the US because it feared that its battery powered machines would be pirated.

Chan said he was confident Segway executives would change their minds as Chinese sales grow.

SegwayChan's Segways cost $10,000 which is a bit pricy in a country where the average salary is less than $100 a month. They sell for $5,000 in the US.

As a far as Chan is concerned he didn’t start the business to make money but to bring the clean technology to China. He sells them in Macau, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. He wants to sell 600 to 1,000 Segway scooters in China this year where staff at the Olympics will use about 100.

Chan's dealership has grown 'significantly' since opening in 2006, with annual revenue now in the millions of US dollars. X
