Wipro gears up to take on Infy and TCS

Broadening its consulting spectrum

By Subhankar Kundu @ Tuesday, June 24, 2008 12:49 PM

Wipro is moving into consulting in a big way, bringing its different wipro consulting units under one broad umbrella named Wipro Consulting services.

The key consulting services that come under the new model are business performance improvement, IT planning & governance, risk & compliance, enterprise architecture and industry services. The total headcount is 1,200 across the different businesses. The business will be segmented into different geographical regions – Europe, the US, India, Middle East, Japan, China and Asia Pacific.

The Wipro move can be taken as a challenge to other Indian consulting giants – Infosys and Tata Consulting Services (TCS). Chinese companies, too, are entering the market with cheap labour.

The Times of India reported a bit of reshuffling in senior positions at Wipro. The former CEO of Wipro BPO, T K Kurien, has taken over as president of consulting business, while Ashutosh Vaidya, vice president of personal computing and infrastructure, is now head of Wipro BPO. Wipro is also looking to spruce up and train consultants by setting up a school.

Meanwhile, Wipro bagged a contract for an e-governance project from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday. MCD is eyeing to design a user-friendly MCD portal by converting reams of manual paperwork into electronic administration. Training will be provided to government officials to improve citizen services. X
