PS3 comeback blocked by Wii

Not so big in Japan

By Dave Murray @ Thursday, July 03, 2008 10:18 AM

Analysts' belief that Sony's PS3 was about to take the lead over Nintendo's Wii in Japan have proven unfounded.

Observers had been watching the PS3's sales figures climb, and claimed that it would overtake the Wii to take its rightful place as the most popular console in Japan.

However, this month the new sales figures show that far from overtaking Nintendo, Sony is losing ground as nearly two Wiis were sold for every PS3. Nintendo sold 235,990 units of its Wii console in the five weeks ended June 29, while sales of the PS3 came to 139,494 units.

Sony spent billions on the PS3, hoping that it would provide a killer application for its Blu-Ray HD video technology. Unfortunately neither has taken off. X
