Sharp eyes top spot for LCD technology

Opens a mammoth LCD plant in Japan

By Subhankar Kundu @ Wednesday, July 09, 2008 7:30 AM

Sharp is setting up a mammoth $9 billion factory complex in an old seaport city near its Osaka headquarters .Sharp will make liquid crystal display (LCD) and solar panels there. It also claims it will be the world’s largest LCD solar panel plant and will start production by the end 0f 2010.

Over the past 10 years, the Japanese company has generated some soaring revenue to $31.7 billion with a profit of $1.7 billion. Sharp's solar panel business stands second to Germany's Q-Cells AG.

The major risk involved is the projection of price declines with the global players like Sony moving into same business.

Sharp can continue to hold its market share with the focused-manufacturing strategy of LCD which can pave a way to other Japanese players. X
