Bharti Airtel is facing being trapped by the policy makers for launching its IPTV (internet protocol television) services without obtaining requisite approval. Information and broadcasting industry (I&B) wants Department of telecom (DoT) take action against Bharti’s, reports the Economic Times.

Bharti claims it has not launched IPTV commercially anywhere in India and was only doing pilots. The final policy decision is still pending, whether to allow private operators to provide such pilot services or not. Considering this I&B in a letter to DoT, has asked the latter to take actions against Bharti’s.

However, state owned telecos like BSNL and MTNL are already providing IPTV services. MTNL provides it in Delhi and Mumbai and BSNL has launched it in many cities.

According to Market Research Company Isuppli the size of the global IPTV market is likely to touch $26.3 billion by 2011, from $779.2 million in 2006. Considering the huge potential IPTV has no wonders why everyone wants to dive in to it.
