Abit is looking forwards to an end of 2008 release of a MID (mobile internet device). It will be running Ubuntu and have a solid state drive. It will use the Intel Atom low-power CPU. With a touch screen, stylus based writing and additional models with slide-out fully QWERTY keyboards this looks to be a fun competitor to the Asus Eee PC. There is no price yet as the release is so far away.
Abit also has a line of fingerprint readers with integrated software solutions available to commercial partners looking for a security solution.
Its big item at Computex for the home buyers is the integrated photo frame and printer called Funfab. The frame itself is customizable and exchangeable if you change your living room décor you can change the frame style. Priced at €199 and available July 2008 it seems to be the fun gift for the newlyweds or grandma. It has a 300x600 resolution and prints photos at 300 dpi. The replacement cartridge for the printer, always the most expensive part of printing over the lifetime of a printer, is only €20 per cartridge.
This type of set-up has commercial applications that most seem to miss in a digital photo frame. It could display a choice of maps in different languages and offer a print option for those that need a copy to take with them. X |
