| | After Singur fiasco, TATA takes a conciliatory step - Plans to provide employment for locals this time By Subhankar Kundu @ Monday, June 02, 2008 1:04 PM
Section - Outsourcing/BPO | | | | TATA has taken a calculated step in setting up a proposed six-million-ton steel plant in Kalinga Nagar, Orissa.
Following the Singhur fiasco at its Nano car plant in West Bengal, Tata is no mood for a repetition here. Learning from the past, the company is all set to open up employment opportunities for educated locals by setting up a business process outsourcing (BPO) unit on the proposed site.
Tata Business Support Service will partner Tata Steel Rural Development Society in setting up the rural BPO unit. About 200 people are expected to gain employment. The first batch is already undergoing specialised training at Tata Business Support Services’ headquarters in Hyderabad. At present, a total of 500 people are employed in the three rural BPO units run by the same concern.
The proposed BPO unit aims to handle the front-end and customer support operations of TATA Teleservices and TATA Sky in the Orissa region, and will also offer services to other companies in Orissa.
A temporary arrangement has been made for the BPO to start its operations in the transit houses and rehabilitation set up established by the company in Kalinga Nagar before moving into a equipped set-up. To start with, the unit will focus on voice processes in English as well as in different regional languages such as Bengali and Hindi. X
