AMD no longer a dead horse - official

Flogging new graphics cards

By Andrew Thomas @ Tuesday, August 12, 2008 10:58 AM

AMD has announced what it likes to describe as the world’s fastest graphics card.

The ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 has 2.4 teraFLOPS of processing grunt combining two ATI Radeon HD 4800 series GPUs with a new cross-GPU connection based on the PCIe 2.0 standard, plus two gigabytes of memory. There's also a Radeon HD 4850 X2 graphics card, at a compelling - aka cheapo - price point.

'It pretty much finalizes AMD's comeback from the dead to lead horse,' quipped Kelt Reeves, president of Falcon Northwest, a maker of high-end gaming PCs. It wasn't immediately clear if Reeves is pronouncing 'lead' to rhyme with 'dead' or 'bleed'.

Henceforth, we shall refer to AMD as Led Zeppelin. Or possibly not.

Readers can check out our review of some more upcoming graphics wonderment from ATI that we ran last week. X
