AMD's Hector out, Dark Mayor in - Losses, dead losses

Chip firm AMD announced that ex-Motorola man Hector Ruiz will give way to ex-DEC man, Dirk Meyer. Ruiz will continue to concentrate on his 'asset light' plan, but Meyer will be the chief executive officer (CEO).

The firm said Meyer will displace Ruiz, as the Intel rival continued to stumble. AMD paid a heap of money for graphics firm ATI, and that accounted for a chunk of the losses. While the ATI division is doing well, AMD's core business is microprocessors, and it has made quite a few mistakes in the last two years.

AMD paid too much for ATI, it has transpired. Intel struck back against AMD, narrowing the smaller firm's 'window of opportunity'. Meyer had been tipped for the job. X
