Apple and Dell compete for holiday shoppers

Two-thirds of US laptop customers will buy one

As US customers rush to the shops it looks like most of them are looking for either an Apple Macbook or a Dell Studio 15 this Christmas.

According to a study released by Change Wave, two-thirds of PC buyers in the US plan to buy either a Macbook or a Dell laptop in the next two months.

Change Wave surveyed more than 3,699 consumers looking to buy a laptop over the next 90 days. The number of people who had decided on the Mac or a Dell were even, with 33 per cent wanting to buy one or the other. The Apple supporters liked the Macbook redesign, and the Dell fans liked the outfit's reputation.

Unfortunately for Dell its consumer business is only about 20 per cent of its overall sales, where as for Apple it is practically everything.

Bad news for both companies is that the number of consumers looking to buy a new computer is smaller than it has been during past years. Change Wave's research indicates that just eight per cent of respondents plan to buy a new laptop this time around, down from 11 per cent  last year. X
