Apple exaggerates Iphone's success

Turns out it didn’t sell a million after all

By Dave Murray @ Thursday, July 17, 2008 12:05 PM

Claims that Apple might have sold a million Iphones over the weekend have been disputed by a leading analyst.

Gene Munster, of analysts Piper Jaffray, estimated that Apple had sold about 425,000 Iphones worldwide, and that it would take Apple at least 17 days to hit the one million mark.

He said that one explanation for the discrepancy may be how Apple counts sales. Sales by Apple's partners are 'claimed' when the devices leave the loading docks in Asia. A fair chunk of those million Iphones recorded as sold by Apple may still be on a boat.

Munster said Apple had certainly sold a lot more Iphones than it had done before. This is mostly because there was international availability in 21 countries, and and a lower entry-level price point. X
