Apple sells its five billionth song

Five year anniversary

By Dave Murray @ Friday, June 20, 2008 11:39 AM

Apple said that its iTunes online store has just flogged its 5 billionth song.

The digital jukebox has been selling legal music content for five years and been making Apple a fortune.
According to a press release, the site is the most popular in the United States where more than 8 million songs were downloaded.

ITunes have also been renting or buying more than 50,000 movies a day.

While sales of CDs and music DVDs fell 13 percent to $15.9 billion last year, the numbers of downloaded songs and mobile-phone ring tones sold rose 34 percent to $2.9 billion.

Apple has not had things entirely its own way. It has found that its market dominance has attracted the attention of anti-trust regulators and lawmakers in France who want the outfit to use more open standards. X
