Axis Communication introduced its 'new generation' video products in Bangalore today. However, the company preferred to take a non-affirmative stand on its participation in providing traffic surveillance to Indian cities.

Prakash Prabhu, country manager, India, Axis communication said: “It’s too early to comment on it, we are in talks with our channels partners, to provide surveillance to various cities in India. Our might comment on it”. On May 28th, Examiner reported, Zicom Electronic Security system Ltd, to undertake the traffic surveillance in Bangalore.

Traffic surveillance, has five elements to it, namely – video capture, record, transport, display and storage. Axis is a provider of the first element that comprises 25% of the surveillance.

When the IT Examiner asked how much revenue Axis aims to generate from its 25% participation in surveillance Prabhu was tightlipped, however, Lee Oh Tee, regional director, south Asia Pacific Region, Axis Communication said, “We sell our products through our channels, and it’s difficult for us to comment the price our channel quote to the user”.

Axis, products are installed across several sectors – transportation, utilities, banking, education, retail, healthcare and manufacturing around the globe. However, Axis' most successful segments are retail and transportation. The company is yet to make an acknowledged stand in India. Albeit, Axis has his participation in newly developed Bangalore BIA airport but again didn’t comment on it much, prefers its partners to do so. Axis has very many channel partners worldwide and reckons it has an important component of Axis in India. The company is alleged to have a channel partner programme launch today. No wonder, why Axis prefers its channel partners to have their say all the time.

Talking about the challenges the company might encounter in India, Prabhu said: “India, though fast transformation is still not as standard as US and U.K department. It lacks collective industry approach on surveillance practices and so it will be a challenge to have expectations of immediate returns on surveillance installations. The company officials went tipsy-turvy when asked if the company has done research on the Indian surveillance market. Prabhu said” it’s tough to specify the numbers, security market in India accounts to approximately $300 million and is expected to reach $750 million mark by 201

The security surveillance market has seen an upsurge post 9.11, security is of prime importance. Prabhu said few years back the thought of being monitored by a camera would have made me uncomfortable but today I feel more secured under surveillance.

Axis, new generation video products built upon the in-house developed ARTPEC-3 chip, will save 50% of network bandwidth compared to MPEG-4 part 2 and up to 80% compared to Motion JPEG. Its video chip helps in giving three times more output and three times better performance. The company is keen to establish its office in Delhi and Mumbai as it sees India with tremendous growth in digital surveillance. “Prabhu feels, India rapid transformation in infrastructure, retail and transportation will provide a great opportunity for Axis networks.
