Bank ATMs refuse money in West Bengal

It can happen only in Bengal

By Subhankar Kundu @ Thursday, September 25, 2008 11:59 AM

The city of Joy has brought its share of sorrow for the citizens of Kolkata with most of the banks shutting down their respective ATM counters in the city to mark the two-day bank strike.

Bank customers are bearing the headache as about nearly 60% of the 400 ATMs were unoperational. The remaining 40% is not enough either are about to run out of cash.

The SBI Staff Association secretary, Ashok Mukherjee has reportedly declared the strike to be a successful. The strike may last indefinitely as the discussions with centre are yet to take place.

Private Banks like ICICI, Axis, and HDFC are feeling the heat as their pro-customer stance will be questioned though these private banks are putting extra-cash in the ATMs for their customers.

Destructive actions like strikes are not new in West Bengal. But one has to question that does West Bengal really afford to continue with its pseudo-revolutionary attitude when they are on the crux of losing out of time of progress? X
