Promises no repetition of Singhur

By Debopriya Nandy @ Thursday, September 11, 2008 1:18 PM

After riots led to the withdrawal of the TATA project from Singur and Nandigram, now Infosys is waiting at the exit.

The company is believed to be about to discontinue its $110 million investment plans in the state. But Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, chief minister of West Bengal, is said to have assured the company that it should feel safe from such problems.

The state IT minister, Debesh Das, conveyed this message to Infosys on the chief minister's behalf. Bhattacharjee claimed that Singur was an exceptional incident  in Bengal, and has asked Infosys to carry on with its proposed investment in a $110million software campus near Kolkata. He confirmed to investors that industrialisation in Bengal is certainly not about to die out.

Promising a balance between agriculture and industry to create employment, Bhattacharjee announced that projects of the Jindals and Videocon Group are being showcased, and they are proceeding peacefully in the state. He added that the government was also oin the process of resolving the Singur issue. X
