From idiot box to smart box

By Harsha Pramod @ Thursday, October 16, 2008 11:37 AM

Telecom services provider Bharti Airtel has announced a partnership with Infosys Technologies for its digital TV services on the direct-to-home (DTH) TV platform.

As part of its digital convergence platform, Infosys will provide a suite of products including devices, application servers and interactive applications that will focus on providing digital TV services to customers. Viewers can use interactive and nonintrusive applications to view relevant and customised information. The partnership will also enable Airtel to offer lower Icity, Inet and Tportal services on Airtel digital TV.

Atul Bindal, president of telemedia services for Bharti Airtel, said that through the partnership with Infosys, Airtel aimed to revolutionise the TV-viewing experience and usher in the future of television into the country.

S D Shibulal, COO of  Infosys said that the technology platform that powers Airtel digital TV would bring the potential of computers to television sets. In addition to entertainment, it was possible to experience interactive information services and engage in transactions using regular TVs. This technology also made it possible to have a converged consumer experience across devices like televisions, computers, smart mobile phones and digital music players. Shibul added that the availability of these services in the Indian market marked the transformation of the idiot box into a smart box. X
