| | India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claims that it can save cash for the country if it adopts Open Source standards and software.
The BJP's policy is remarkably similar to calls by other opposition groups in other countries who are looking for ways to save cash. There is also a backlash in many other countries over the handing out of expensive and ultimately unsuccessful IT contracts to a select range of firms.
The BJP is currently using online advertising and its own website as key elements of its campaign strategy for the elections that start next month.
Previously the party has refused to enter the fray on the open source or proprietary software debate and said that this was a matter to be decided by each government agency.
According to its IT Vision document, which was released over the weekend, the BJP wants a Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) with a unique Citizen Identification Number (CIN) for every Indian citizen in three years.
It also has promised to give laptops to 10 million students, with interest-free loans offered to students who can't afford a one-time payment. X
