The BPOs, KPOs and LPOs will soon turn ‘NoPOs’. Sounds lovely.
'NoPO' stands for No Purchase Order, No Projects Outsourced, No Profits On board, No Post Openings, No Paid Outings, No Premium Offers.
India's IT/ITES companies have expressed concern over US President Barack Obama's plans to clamp down on the outsourcing industry.
IT-BPO employees’ union, UNITES India general secretary, R Karthik Shekhar told IT Examiner “We at UNITES are surprised that it has taken six months for our the IT/ITES czars to realise what was written on the wall and the reaction has been with layoff under the guise of performance and this to was anticipated. That is why we have coined the NoPO”.
Several IT leaders in India and the US believe that Obama’s speech was just to please the US trade unions that supported him during his presidential campaign.
UNITES has already initiated talks on preventing protectionism in the US by offering to lobby jointly with industry bodies.
The ‘protectionist’ stance of the US is receiving criticism from countries like India, where IT industry is mostly dependant on the US clients.
Karthik added: “The current recession is turning the US inwards and the same country that taught the world 'open economy', is now demanding protectionism. We think the pain of a turbulent economy is making many Americans target outsourcing.” X
