The much-awaited Internet protocol television (IPTV) which is supposed to be launched by the Indian Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) in India will see a delay in launch in three major Indian cities – Kolkata , Bangalore and Ahmedabad. The reason for this failure is the agreements with leading broadcasters and content providers are yet to finalised.
The Chief General Manager of BSNL-Kolkata, S K Chakravarty says that the broadcasters were bit apprehensive about signing an agreement with third parties rather their intention is inclined towards entering into agreement with BSNL itself. Chakravarty added that IOL Broadband had shown interest in getting into a deal directly with BSNL, bypassing the third parties.
Hindering the growth of IPTV, the matter has led the broadcasters to turn away their faces from any possible deal. Chakravarty further said that BSNL is in the process of acquiring equipment required for downloading signals and distribution. He affirmed that it will take one more year to re-launch the IPTV with new infrastructure.
Now, it remains to be seen if BSNL can really reach an amicable solution.
Meanwhile, Mahanagar Telecommunications Nigam Limited (MTNL) is racing to embrace 3G services which will be offered to its subscribers as it reportedly plans to invest $23.6 million for acquiring the specified spectrum, said its Chairman and Managing director (CMD) R S P Sinha.
The other state-owned telco is looking to launch the services in Delhi and Mumbai within three and six months respectively, soon after acquiring the spectrum. The trial spectrum has already been tested and MTNL reckons that its core network is at its place.
