BSNL launches mobile backup system

Address book can be retrieved when phone is lost

By Harsha Pramod @ Monday, October 06, 2008 10:41 AM

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has launched a mobile backup system in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, enabling subscribers to retrieve their contact numbers even if they lose their phone.

Mahesh Shukla, BSNL's general manager of the Bhopal circle, said that subscribers are more affected by the loss of their contact numbers than by losing their handsets. BSNL says that by subscribing to the mobile backup system, users can retrieve their contact numbers. The new service comes at a cost of Rs 1 per day.

Shukla said that most mobile service providers were focusing on value-added services, and that the mobile backup system should appeal strongly to customers. However, subscribers can currently only recover contact numbers. They will not be able to recover other features such as music, photos and videos.

GPRS subscribers can activate the service by sending an SMS "SUB" or "HELP" to 58989. Alternatively, they can access it at the website: http//minv.bsnl.onmobile.com. BSNL aims to provide 80,000 new GSM mobile connections, 10,900 landline connections and 9,500 broadband connections by March 31, 2009. X
