BSNL offers landlines for Rs 20

Aims to steal business from mobile operators

By Harsha Pramod @ Thursday, July 24, 2008 12:12 PM

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has announced a new plan for landlines in rural Uttar Pradesh (UP).

Under this plan, users can get a phone connection by paying Rs 20 per month. Under another plan, users can make a lifetime payment of Rs 200 without any monthly charges. They also get 20 free calls every month. This plan is proposed only in rural UP. The plans will be expanded in other areas based on response.

Currently, India has a telephone density of 24.63%. The number of mobile phone subscribers in the country is 242.4 million.
The new plans are believed to have been triggered by the fast growth in mobile industry, which seems to have affected the landline industry. In order to stay afloat, BSNL has come forward with attractive packages. X
