Intel has invested €24 million ($38 million) in Berlin-based solar cell maker Sulfurcell, which produces high-efficiency, monolithic solar modules. The cash from Intel's venture capital arm, Intel Capital, makes the chip giant the biggest single stakeholder in Sulfurcell's current financing round totalling some €85 million ($133 million).
Sulfurtech builds solar modules using Copper, Indium, Sulphur and Selenium and is operating a pilot production line prior to starting mass production.
'Investments into clean tech such as solar energy take centre stage for Intel capital, in particular against the background of constantly rising energy costs for consumers and enterprises,' says Intel Capital president Arvind Sodhani. 'We invest in innovative technologies in order to boost alternative energy sources, reduce emissions and expand the usage of these technologies.' X
