Growth to accelerate

According to market research firm ORG, growth in the camera phone market in India is likely to increase from the present level of three per cent, thanks to the entry of 3G and other high-end telecom technologies.

The mobile phone market in India is comparatively far better than in developed countries. While growth in the camera phone market has risen by three per cent, the low-end mobile phone segment has seen a decline of four per cent in its growth. The main reason behind this trend is rising competition and lowering prices.

ORG has reported in the survey that camera phones in India now account for 36 per cent of the total market. In value terms, the sector takes a big bite with 67 per cent. Monochrome and other low-cost phones account for a much lower 17 per cent share, with a value proposition of 47 per cent.

The target audience segment is undoubtedly the youth market. The camera has become has become an integral part of a mobile phone.

Most makers are coming up with camera options even in low-end phones, opening up to low-cost low-end users with trendy features like FM radio, memory card storage, Bluetooth and music players. X
