CDMA players with most subscribers to get 3G

Reliance likely to capitalise

By Jayant Mishra in Mumbai @ Monday, August 04, 2008 10:38 AM

The 3G policy announced last Friday has certainly given CDMA operators reason to bite their nails in anticipation. The proposal to give CDMA-based mobile operators third generation (3G) spectrum without having to participate in any auction is the reason.

Under the policy, CDMA operators including Reliance communications and Tata teleservices, can acquire one slot in the 800Mhz band, the most lucrative and efficient frequency band for 3G services, for CDMA operations. But the slot will be given to the player with most number of subscribers in a circle.

Out of the two slots available in the 800Mhz frequency band, one will be allotted to BSNL and MTNL (Mahanagar telecommunication Nigam limited), leaving just one slot vacant.

According to subscriber-related data (for June 2008), Reliance Communications has the most number of subscribers in almost all the circles across the country except Delhi and Maharashtra, where Tata is number one. Reliance is likely to get bandwidth in the lucrative band in most circles. X
