CDMAs want GSMs to spend more on spectrum - Step will increase government revenue

CDMA companies are demanding that GSM providers pay Rs 1.31 billion ($303 million) per megahertz for all radio frequencies they hold on excess of 4.4MHz, reports the Economic Times.

The telecom ministry proposed last month that operators should pay for the spectrum that the Department of Telecom (DoT) provides.

Now, CDMA operators have made a presentation to the Finance, Industry and Communication Ministry that payments made by GSM operators for excess of radio spectrum would bring revenue worth Rs 99 million ($2,314 million) to the government. The operators have also approached the prime minister’s office and sector regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for the same reason. X
