Civil service preliminary exams may be conducted online

Proposal aims to improve transparency in selection process

A parliamentary standing committee on personal and public grievances has proposed conducting preliminary tests for civil services examination online, reports the Times of India.

The proposal is part of the committee’s efforts to make the selection process transparent. The committee proposed that the exams be conducted along the lines of the General Management Aptitude Test (GMAT), where the tests are conducted online and candidates get their marks instantly. According to the committee, the new system could save time, as it eliminates the need for conducting exams and evaluating papers.

The committee has also recommended videoing the interview process so that it can be cross-checked to evaluate the selection process, with the aim of ruling out any discrimination. There have previously been complaints about the interview board. The committee also observed that the practice of conducting separate civil service interviews for other backward caste (OBC), scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) candidates was in violation of the law.
