Comcast buys Plaxo

Social cable

Cable company Comcast has bought the social network Plaxo in a bid to add the technology for its14 million high-speed Internet subscribers and 24.2 million cable subscribers.

According to News.com, Plaxo, which started out as an online storage system for your address book, has been running the Pulse social network and has 1.5 million active monthly users. Lately it has been overshadowed by the likes of Facebook and MySpace and started working with Comcast last year. At the moment, it offers Comcast a networked address book to subscribers of its various services.

Plaxo's software could also be used in Comcast's tru2Way project to create programmes to run on set-top boxes. One idea is that since users on Pulse share Flickr photos with their friends and family, it would be possible that they could extend that sharing when they are in front of the TV, on the phone or at the computer.
