Communists to help CPM on BSNL disinvestment

When communism was not working in telcos

It seems disinvestment of the state-owned telecom Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is bothering the Communist Party, which unable to capture the central's attention on this matter is now waiting for its political partner, the DMK, to make a move.

MK Pandhe, the communist politburo member and CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) president addressed a letter to Karunanidhi, the DMK supremo on Saturday, informing it of  the government's proposal to list the divested shares publicly, writes Debopriya Nandy.

This decision of the Left( CPM) has two reasons, one is obviously because A Raja, the minister of communication belongs to the DMK, and also because the DMK had previously forced the government to withdraw its plan of disinvesting equity holding in Neyveli Lignite Corporation in the year,2006.

MK Pandhe claimed that BSNL telecom has opposed the governmental policies by remaining stubborn on not disinvesting profit making public sector undertakings. In fact the government had offered shares to the workers, despite of which the BSNL union opposed the proposal, at a meeting convened on August 7.

However, the communication minister tried to give a ear to the protests of the workers' representatives, whereas the finance ministry was left undaunted, added Pandhe.    X
