DoT rejects TRAI 3G review recommendation

Trai-ing arguments continue

By Jayant Mishra in Mumbai @ Friday, August 22, 2008 12:47 PM

TRAI (Telecom regulatory authority of India) may have pointed out shortcomings in the 3G policy laid down by DoT (Department of Telecom) and recommended to review certain points, but the ministry has rejected the regulator's call to review and says the roll out of 3G services is on track.

TRAI had suggested DoT review its decision to allocate spectrum to CDMA operators on subscription and had asked the ministry to refer the regulator, so that it could suggest terms and conditions of the new licence category for new and foreign players.

Rejecting the rejection, an internal DoT note said that unified access licence holders are authorised to provide triple play - voice, data and video without any limit on the speed of data. 3G service providers are not a new category of licensees and they will be offering 3G services under the terms and conditions of the UASL licence.
