Europe turns its back on fixed lines

Don't feel the POTS

By Dave Murray @ Friday, June 27, 2008 4:12 PM

European telephone users are fast turning their backs on fixed line services.

The European Commission's survey of 27,000 homes in the 27-nation bloc found that one in four had shunned fixed lines and were using mobiles only. A fifth are now using Voice over IP.

The situation was more noticeable in Eastern Europe where 39% were using mobiles because mobiles were better than using the elderly fixed-line networks.

Finland has 61% of people using mobiles instead of fixed lines, but that is the home of Nokia so it is hardly surprising.

While half of European households have access to the Internet only 36% can use broadband. X
