Excess spectrum becomes cheaper

May leave no room for new operators

The department of telecom (DoT) has reduced the projected pricing of excess spectrum for mobile operators exceeding their limit, reports the Economic Times. This will result in a loss of more than Rs 50 billion ($1billion) to the government annually.

The telecom commission plans to meet on July 18 to discuss the proposal. If implemented, it will result in various mobile operators holding excess spectrum legally. This will leave no room for new operators, due to the finite nature of the resource. X
