Ericsson and 3 Italia have managed to get a High Speed Packet Access network up and running which can offer a upload speed of 5.8Mbps.

The Evolution network has the same download maximum but the increased upload speed is being considered the next big thing for mobile telecoms. Jeanette Fridberg, director of marketing for radio access networks at Ericsson, said that the Evolution has lower latency, which will improve performance when sending large pictures or files.

She did add however it would be a long time before online games find what they want from a mobile network. Ericsson will start shipping the upgrade later this month for its mobile base stations and several operators to start using it.

Future releases will increase the HSPA download speed to 42Mbps and the upload speed to 12Mbps. X
