The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has raised concerns over the growing cyber crimes in US that cost tens of millions of dollars and also posing as a serious threat to US security. The FBI cyber division pointed out activities like computer spying and personal information theft as something that needs immediate measures to be curbed.
While speaking to the media, FBI Assistant Director Shawn Henry stated that organized-crime groups are drawn by the ease of reaching millions of potential victims, CIOL reports.
Further adding, he said that about 24 countries have developed cyber-attack capabilities and have their eyes on targets and this is possible by penetrating the networks the U.S. government or businesses. Without naming the countries, he said. “There are countries who have an interest in obtaining information from the U.S., in terms of the electronic theft of data”.
U.S. intelligence agencies have earlier pointed fingers on Russia and China as these two nations as they have the abilities to electronic spying by breaking through U.S. computer networks.
U.S. federal agents are stepping up efforts to fight computer crime. They are also working with foreign counterparts which the similar need was felt. Botnets are being used to attack computer networks by sending spam e-mails and spreading malicious code.
The US Government has learnt put efforts to fight cybercrime. In January, U.S. President George Bush launched an effort called the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative.
Some of the major efforts include educating government agencies and businesses about cyber threats, and recruiting top U.S. workers to the cybersecurity field.
Lamenting on the fact that the cream of cybersecurity professionals have already opted for alternative career options, Henry cried a bit. X |
