The Prime Minister (PM) Manmohan Singh said that the eleventh 5-year plan was a knowledge investment plan. He added that the government hoped to create the next big wave of investment in higher education, reports the Hindu.
The PM was speaking to students and faculty of the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati. He said that India had the potential to create more than 500 million trained people by 2022, which is more than a fourth of the global workforce. He said that an education revolution could launch a significant opportunity for India, which should be considered as India’s most important national venture.
The government is setting up eight new IITs, seven new IIMs, 16 central universities, 14 world-class universities and 5 new Indian institutes of science education and research. The PM emphasised the need for initiating public-private partnerships in education. Many prominent educational institutions globally were teaming up with industry to establish ‘knowledge partnerships’ on campuses.
The PM said that the government was launching a knowledge network connected with all major institutions of higher education to connect with each other. The first phase of the network would be operational before the end of the year. X
