Intel is celebrating - some might say too soon - the dawning of 4G mobile and WiMAX and Sprint have a lot to do with it.
According to Intel, Xohm, which is Sprint's 4G business unit, is building the "fastest and most capable" mobile broadband network available in the USA.
And Xohm, together with its WiMAX egosystem, will eventually transform itself into little gizmos, said Intel. This is because Xohm has set up a WiMAX system in Baltimore.
The chip giant wheeled out Sean Maloney, chief sales and marketing officer of Intel to enthuse about WiMAX. "This is an historic milestone for the US and residents of Baltimore," he said. "We can now set our sights on ensuring a smooth city-by-city build out of WiMAX 4G and relish in what will be an incredible amount of Internet related innovation," he continued.
Intel is so keen on WiMAX because its new notebooks include its Echo Peak WiMAX wi-fi module, and vendors are promising to support it in their laptops.
Some analysts believe that WiMAX will be pipped to the post by LTE. But then the same people were saying that wi-fi wouldn't be that good either. Nevertheless, Maloney told the IT Examiner back in early May that governments were dragging their feet on liberating spectra, with auctions forthcoming which will help enable WiMAX. X
