But does it float?

Fujitsu has unveiled a fingerprint-enabled waterproof cell phone.

The F-01A utilises Authentec's AES1711 fingerprint sensor to provide NTT DOCOMO subscribers with important security options while snorkeling or resting on terra firma. The bulky phone, which is based on a Symbian operating system, features a 3.5-inch widescreen VGA touchscreen display, 5.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, integrated GPS and a 1Seg mobile TV tuner.

According to Authentec, damage caused by exposure to excess moisture or immersion in water is the leading cause of cell phone returns not covered under warranty. As such, the F-01A reportedly meets stringent IPX5 and IPX7 specifications and is capable of submersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. In addition, the AuthenTec's advanced fingerprint sensors have been covered with a protective resin to prevent harmful leaks.

"We're pleased to now offer this unique waterproof mobile phone which combines next generation, all-inclusive entertainment with the convenient security of an AuthenTec fingerprint sensor in the new docomo PRIME series phone," explained Katsumi Takada of Fujitsu. "Users of the new F-01A not only enjoy the peace of mind offered by its waterproof capability but also by the integrated fingerprint security which helps protect its stored files and personal information."

Authentec has done its best to attract bored manufacturers by insisting that the F-01A's sleek waterproof design can be integrated into various industrial configurations.

Sounds ideal for castaways on desert islands with good cellphone coverage. X
