Search giant Google is trying out a new SMS service on users in India before launching it worldwide.
The Google SMS channel allows access to up to 30 free SMS information channels and is currently available in English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. There is currently a limit of 10 messages a day and users can choose to receive these at pre-determined times.
Google says the service is advertisement-free and is aimed at mobile subscribers with limited access to the Internet. The company hints that the ad-free aspect of the service may be reconsidered when the full commercial service launches worldwide. X
