Google wins in Viacom case

Judge finds no evidence of copyright infringement

A lawsuit filed by Viacom against Google which has been pending since 13 March 2007 has come to an end.

Manhattan district judge Louis Stanton announced the verdict in favour of Google. Google’s request for a protective order barring the disclosure of the source code which controls the Youtube.com search function and Google.com's Internet search tool has been accepted by the judge.

The $1 billion copyright-infringement lawsuit by Viacom to force Google and its Youtube unit to turn over the computer code on their search functions has been denied by the federal judge. Viacom filed this case in response to what it saw as Google’s apathetic attitude towards teenagers who illicitly uploaded clips from Viacom properties. X
