Google’s Android operating system could really shake up the mobile phone industry, according to a leading university.

Massachusetts Industry of Technology gave 20 computer science students the goal of designing a software program for Andriod.

According to professor Hal Abelson the process, they worked out that an open system like Android could really shake up the mobile phone industry and phones will soon challenge the Internet as a source of innovation.

Until now access to mobile phones has been guarded by the phone companies. However the students found that by using Android they could develop interesting software that people would want.

One thing was something which could use your mobile to unlock your car. Something that Apple, would never allow on its iPhone.
