Havok has introduced a new suite of AI (Artificial Intelligence) capabilities for game development companies.
The platform allows developers to design advanced pathfinding scenarios while creating realistic character interaction within 'highly dynamic' game environments.
'Havok's customers have asked us to provide an AI technology engineered from the ground up to deal with dramatically dynamic and destructible environments. Havok AI if the first commercially available solution that can handle the fast paced, visceral environments our customers have in development right now,' Dave Gargan, principal engineer for Havok told IT Examiner.
'Havok technology is always cross platform and platform optimised. It is a technology designed to handle arbitrary real-time 3D environments and isn't specifically limited to any (single) genre or application.'
According to Gargan, Havok's AI SDK includes an updated mesh generator that quickly creates complex game levels. The kit also provides fully integrated pathfinding capabilities that effectively process thousands of moving obstacles in real-time. In addition, Havok's AI characters are capable of predicting the 'movement' of various obstacles and adapting accordingly.
David O'Meara, managing director of Havok, explained that the new AI platform was expected to expand the company's product portfolio.
'As the provider of choice for the game development industry featured in over 200 games to date, Havok continues to engineer new software and tools that address key challenges currently unmet in the gaming industry, making Havok the ultimate one-stop shop for development,' added O'Meara.
David Coghlan, Havok's VP of development, concurred:
'Havok AI represents a natural extension of our portfolio of run-time technologies. It provides a focused set of services and technologies that help enable plausible, engaging and creative in-game characters as well as delivering significant productivity gains during production,' said Coghlan. X
