HCL signs Uganda deal

Teams up with SCI

By Jayant Mishra in Mumbai @ Tuesday, October 21, 2008 6:51 AM

Ugandan IT provider Service and Computer Industries (SCI) has entered into a vending partnership with India-based HCL Technology to sell the HCL line of products in Uganda.

The new line of laptops and desktops for Uganda will come with Microsoft’s Vista operating system and will be pre-installed with Kaspersky antivirus software.

Jitaditya Mallik, SCI's manager of retail sales, said that the laptops are priced reasonably, with prices starting from $450, in order to make them affordable even for school children.

The vending partnership also allows SCI to sell HCL's Mileap portable laptops, which are considered to be the cheapest in the world. Despite being the entry level machine in the laptop market, Mileap comes with 1GB of memory and an 80GB of hard drive, touch buttons and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The 7-incherotatable screen laptop is Wifi enabled. X
