Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal has demanded 20,000 more direct-to-home (DTH) receiv sets for tribal areas of the state due to tough topography and location along the international border.
According to Dhumal, the district of Lahaul and Spiti and Bharmour subdivision of Chamba district are very remote areas and remained inaccessible for more than five to six months in a year. These areas also constituted more than 42% of the state.
Installation of more DTH receive systems in these areas would enable all households in the tribal areas of the state to have access to all the Doordarshan (national television channel) and All India Radio channels being aired. The chief minister said that this would go a long way in connecting the people of these areas to the mainstream.
Dhumal said that the centre had stopped the scheme of installing TV transmitters. DTH receive systems were an alternative to TV transmitters in the remote areas. Therefore, more of the systems are required to provide television coverage in these low-signal areas. X
