Aditya Birla’s telecom arm, Idea Cellular, has announced the commercial launch of its GSM-based mobile services in Bihar and Jharkhand, reports Telecom Tiger.

The step forms part of the expansion plans of the company, and makes Idea the fifth operator to launch services in the two states, along with Airtel, Aircel, BSNL and Rcom.

The company plans to cover 15 million of the population of 2,500 villages and towns in these two states, with near 800 towers. By the end of the fiscal year, Idea will expand its coverage to about 60 million people in 16,500 towns and villages.

International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank, has helped Idea Cellular expand its presence in 15 of the country’s 22 mobile network areas.

Last month , IFC announced that in order to expand the availability and affordability of mobile telephone services in India, it will invest $100 million in Idea, so that it could strengthen its network in the existing market and extend mobile services to Bihar. X
