Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport at New Delhi has launched a hi-tech in-line baggage managing system to expedite the predeparture process without compromising security, reports the Economic Times.
The system was installed at the airport six months back and was put through parallel trials with the existing x-ray system. The system has eliminated the need for the passengers to queue up for x-ray screening prior to check in.
The baggage managing system involves a three-level scanning process to ensure that the baggage is completely examined and marked during the course. The system weighs and transport the luggage as the passenger loads it on to the conveyer belt in the check-in counter.
The system allows the bags to be checked and assigned automatically by the combined functioning of conveyer belts, bar code readers and in-line baggage sorters. This allows the passengers to proceed for check in and receive their boarding pass without hassles.Only baggage requiring further investigation will be transferred to the off-line inspection area, where it will be manually examined in the presence of the passenger.
Currently, the system has been installed for two of eight rows at the airport and will soon extend to others as well. According to airport authorities, the new in-line baggage managing system will allow faster check-in at the same time enhancing security. X
