IITs will raise cut offs for general categories

IIT does not want to waste vacant seats in SC and ST category

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will raise cut off marks for subjects using a new formula, reports the Telegraph. The formula will be announced soon.

The IITs will also lower the admission criteria for scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribe (ST) students in 2009 to reduce waste of seats. The cutoff percentage of marks for the category is 60% of the lowest percentage received in the general category. Next year, the cut off percentage in each subject and aggregate will be reduced to 50% of the lowest obtained by the general category students.

However, the IITs have postponed decision on raising the minimum marks required in the board exams. The policy-making body of the IITs, the joint admission board of the IITs met in Kharagpur to discuss these concerns. X
