By Examiner Staff @ Tuesday, March 17, 2009 10:39 AM

Total PC sales in India between October and December 2008 were 1.4 million (14 lakh) units. In its latest report of quarterly industry performance review, Manufacturer’s Association of Information Technology (MAIT) said that the PC sales have registered a decline of 19 per cent during the same period in 2008.

According to the report, the desktops stood at 1 million (10 lakh) units while notebooks recorded a sale of 0.35 million (3.5 lakh) units, and given the current market scenario, the overall PC sales for current quarter is expected to remain at the same level as in the last fiscal at 7.3 million (73 lakh) units.

MAIT’s executive director, Vinnie Mehta said that the desktops recorded a decline in consumption by 15 per cent, while sales of notebooks fell by 30 per cent in the same period last year. Telecom, banking, education and the e-governance initiatives of the union and the state governments were the markets for the PC sales, but the strengthening of the dollar impacted the industry adversely.

The assembled desktops accounted for 39 per cent of total desktop sales in Q3/2008-09, while the remaining came from the branded desktops. Out of this, Indian brands had a proportion of 13 per cent of the total sales, and foreign brands had rest of the proportion.

Apart from PCs, other products that have witnessed a steep decline in sales are servers, printing and power products. While the server business came down by 49  per cent with sale of 21,000 units in the third quarter, sales in printers, especially the dot matrix printers fell by 20 per cent. In power products, UPS sales saw a decline of 36 per cent. X
